Hours will vary depending on the season and workload. During the busy season (approx. July-October), there may be 40-hour work weeks. During the slow season (approx. November-June), hours will vary considerably.This position will perform intermittent work in Yamhill/Polk/Washington and other adjacent counties primarily to visit seed warehouses in a university vehicle to take samples of crop seed for testing and to deliver or attach certification tags to seed lots that meet the minimum quality standards. The Oregon Seed Certification Service (OSCS) program is under the Extension Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources. The purpose of seed certification is to ensure quality seeds through programs such as field inspections, seed sampling, and seed testing. Our Natural Resource Specialist 2 (Seed Regulatory and Smoke Management) is a permanent full-time position, located at The Oregon Department of Agriculture Headquarters in Salem, Oregon and is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) works to ensure healthy natural resources, environment, and economy for Oregonians now and in the future through inspection and certification, regulation, and promotion of agriculture and food. The ODA is currently recruiting for a Seed Regulatory Specialist to join the Seed Regulatory (SRP) and Smoke Management (SMP) Programs within our Market Access and Certification Program Area. This position supports the department’s mission to provide food safety, protect agricultural and natural resources, and to promote agricultural market development. The SRP provides a variety of services to the seed industry to facilitate the sale of seed within Oregon and to domestic and international markets. The SRP is responsible for regulating the sale and labeling of agricultural and vegetable seed sold, offered for sale, or transported within Oregon. The SRP also provides consumer protection services to ensure that seed sold at the retail level complies with Oregon’s seed law. The SMP administers the rules for field burning in the Willamette Valley, including open field burning, test fires, training fires, and preparatory burning for grass seed and cereal grains. The SMP coordinates, registers, and distributes burn permits, authorizes, and provides surveillance for burning activities during the field burning season, and monitors burned acreage and collects program fees. Working conditions Position requires work in both field and office environments. This position requires a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. The employee in this position may drive a state vehicle. These assignments may occasionally require long or unusual hours, travel overnight, or driving long distances. Safe driving practices and performance of the position duties with initiative and good judgment are important. AND A Bachelor’s degree Agronomy, Plant Science, Agricultural Sciences, Natural Resources, or other related field or three additional years of required experience in the activities described above. A Master’s degree in Agronomy, Plant Science, Agricultural Sciences, Natural Resources, or other related field will substitute for up to one year of the required experience in the activities described above. A Doctorate degree in Agronomy, Plant Science, Agricultural Sciences, Natural Resources, or other related field will substitute for up to two years of the required experience in the activities described above.
