  • Dr. Jing Zhou, Oregon State University

Characterizing perennial and annual ryegrasses and detecting seed contamination between the two has been a challenge for years. Current methods leave room for improvement in accuracy and timeliness. The idea of a rapid genetic test has also been around for years, but without recent genome sequencing there was no way to develop accurate molecular markers.  Recently, the USDA-ARS in Logan, UT teamed up with the OSU Seed Lab and the International Seed Testing Association to test molecular markers that track vernalization genes in the ryegrasses.  The genes should be highly correlated with perennialism and useful for a genetic test. In his presentation, Shaun will go over the progress in development of this genetic test, as well as its strengths and weaknesses. There should be ample time for questions if Shaun doesn’t get caught up in monologuing.
